The Great Commission

12 Jan

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age  (Matthew 28:19-20, NASB)

What does “make disciples” mean?  What do you think it means? What have you been told it means?  Let’s first clear up some misconceptions:

  1. It does not mean invite them to church.
  2. It does not mean hand them a track.
  3. It does not even mean have them accept Jesus!

The term “make disciples” is just one word in the greek text and it’s an imperative verb (in other words it’s a command).  The verb means to make someone a pupil, a learner.   Who is this someone?    What are they to learn?  Context provides the answer:  The someone is “all nations” and they are to learn all that Jesus commanded.

The great commission is not about winning souls (although that’s required); it’s not about baptizing people (although that’s part of it); it’s not about getting people to walk the aisle, sign a card or even join a church!   It’s about making them pupils and thus inferring they learners.  You know what is not in the Bible? Graduation is not in the Bible.  Nowhere in the Bible will you find:  Learn this and you are done!  You may find limits set in the teachings of man but you will not find those limits in Scripture.

So I leave you with this: Who is your teacher:  The apostles and prophets via the Scripture or man?   Are you learning from books, youtube, websites and preachers or are you learning from God’s Word?  Where do you put your trust and faith,  on the Word of God or in someone who tells you what that Word of God says?  Are you a disciple of God or of a man?

You need to know what the Word says not what someone tells you it says.  You need to be a Berean and examine the Scriptures to test ALL these other sources of teachings.

Wrong on all Levels

10 Dec
Have you ever heard someone use the phrase:  He meant well; bless his heart!   If you’ve heard or use this expression, you can be certain of two things: 1) Someone did something really dumb and 2) they really meant something other than bless his heart.   Well if I were “politically correct” I would say to the pastor and elders of the Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church of Houston, Texas: ” You meant well, bless your heart”  Since I am not politically correct,  what I would say to those participating in the “Faith Shared” initiatives is:  What were you thinking, this is wrong on all possible levels!!!
If you are unaware of Faith Shared and their objectives you can read about them here.   Also, the list of Churches (numerous) that have signed up to participate can be found on this page. This is so unbiblical,   I am not going to waste time or electrons discussing it further; I’d rather stand on the Word of God!
The apostle John tells us:  “Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into  your  house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds. (2 John 1:8-11 NASB)”
John provides three very important messages in these four verses:
1) Christianity is the only path to God (v 8-9). Call me narrow minded; I don’t care because it’s God’s words not mine.  The Jesus of Islam is not the Son of God nor the Messiah.  If they do not have the Son then they don’t have the Father either.
2) John tells us that if they don’t bring the teachings of Christ that we are not to receive them in our house nor even give them a greeting.  Am I wrong or is clergy bringing in Muslim clerics and reading from the Qur’an giving them a greeting and receiving them into their house?
3) Lastly, John tells us that if we give him even so much as a greeting we participate in their evil deeds. Participates: Is koinōneō.   Koinōneō means to come into communion or fellowship with, to become a sharer, be made a partner, to enter into fellowship,  join one’s self to an associate, make one’s self a sharer or partner… It infers a full blown involvement and not casual association!
The Gospel is Christ and Christ crucified, and the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing 1Cor 1:18.  It is not the gospel of love and acceptance of those who believe in whatever it is the choose to believe!  Man’s wisdom is not God’s Wisdom.

New Math – Long Division

9 Dec

I was raised a Roman Catholic and left the Catholic Church 32 years ago. Growing up, I always thought that Christianity had two major divisions: Protestant and Catholic. How could I have gotten that thought so wrong. Today, there are so many splits and fractures that it would take a doctoral thesis to list and explain them all.

Under the “Protestant” umbrella we have major denominations (e.g. Presbyterian, Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalian …etc) and within each major denomination we have other denominations (e.g. PCA, PCUSA, OPC, EPC … etc). Outside of the main denominations, there are also mega and minor “independents”. As you dig deeper you will find that all these different bodies have a different Philosophy, Theology, Ideology, Christology, Eschatology and other ologys that make them different than their counterparts. Calvinism, Arminianism, Reformed Theology, Covenant Theology, Dominion Theology, Replacement Theology, Allegorical Interpretation, Preterism, Kingdom Now …. The mind boggling list goes on and on.

Roman Catholicism is no better; they just handle it differently. I left the Roman Catholicism because of a heresy they where teaching youths in their the Catholic educational system at the time. When I confronted our monsignor about this, his response was yes, they are teaching that now but not all of us hold to that teaching. The catholic church is the self proclaimed “universal church” under which its constituents may hold many beliefs. With that admission I left the Roman Catholicism and never looked back. The point is there are many divisions and different theologies in Catholicism but they keep it all under one big umbrella.

And it’s not just Catholics and Protestants. There is a whole other group of churches / religions that call themselves Christians and put themselves under the Christian Umbrella. When you add these groups to the mix, the differences expand exponentially.

One Scripture, hundreds of different beliefs; why? If you think about it and let the Holy Spirit open your eyes, the answer becomes clear! That answer is man! The one thing that ALL these differences have in common is that some person put their spin on Scripture to establish a set of beliefs and then those beliefs were turned into a religious system that was taught to and adopted by others. ALL of them without exception!

This is not a recent phenomena; it has been happening since the beginning of the Church. The apostle Paul tells us: “For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe’s people, that there are quarrels among you. Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, “I am of Paul,” and “I of Apollos,” and “I of Cephas,” and “I of Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? … For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. (1 Corinthians 1:11-13, 17 NASB)”. Division amongst the earliest believers aligning under a certain pastor or belief system. It was never meant to be this way.

Paul goes on to say: “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.” Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. (1 Corinthians 1:18-21 NASB)”

There are a lot of very Godly men spreading God’s Word helping many grow in Christ but they are still fallible men! “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1 NASB)” There are also a number of apostates who ultimately reject the Gospel and use the Christian umbrella to lead us to destruction. “For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:4 NASB)”

Ever since I became a Christian, two passages of Scripture has had a profound impact on me. One of them is: Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’ (Matthew 7:22, 23 NASB)” Reading these verses in context it is clear that these people think they knew Jesus and did His will. We are without excuse.

So what’s the answer… The Word of God! “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17 NASB)”. Remember brothers and sisters, Scriptures where not written for the “wise” to interpret then tell you what to do, they were written for you. So the next time you are in Bible study ask the Holy Spirit: “Is this what Scripture says or what a man says the Scripture says?” Take the time this Christmas season and examine your faith. Is it a true saving faith according to the Scriptures or a set of beliefs stemming from a person.

Merry Christmas???

7 Dec

The pagan season of saturnalia is upon us and the heathens are trying to strip all vestiges of Christmas out of their celebrations.

So my question to you today is: Do you celebrate Christmas or Saturnalia? Let me help with this by asking a few more questions:
1) Do you indulge in excess food and drink during this time?
2) Do you decorate a tree inside your home?
3) Do you kiss under a mistletoe?
4) Do you exchange gifts?
5) Do you sing naked in the streets and sacrifice a human being on December 25 th.?
If you answered yes to all of the above then you celebrate Saturnalia!

There is little doubt that many of today’s Christmas traditions have their roots in paganism. Not only are these traditions pagan in origin, but December 25th is most likely not the date of our Lord’s birth. However, I am not here to give a history lesson and you should look into this deeper if you so desire. I also am not here to pass judgement on how you celebrate Christmas but, I do need to ask you a just a few more thought provoking questions:

As God looks down on you and your household this Christmas Season, will He see actions and behaviors that honor and commemorate our Savior’s birth or will He see a Satunalia festival? Will He be able to tell the difference between His people and the unsaved?

Global Warming

5 Dec

Global warming???  I bet you’re thinking “What does global warming have to do with the Word of God?”  It’s quite simple… If you think man is messing up the world and creating global warming which will ultimately lead to global catastrophes,  just wait until you see what God does to this world.   The Bible tells us “The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun , and it was given to it to scorch men with fire .   Men were scorched with fierce heat ; and they blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they did not repent so as to give Him glory.(Revelation 16:8-9 NASB)”

Ever since I received my first Bible, I have been fascinated by the book of Revelation.  Unlike most people, who start reading their first Bible at Genesis 1 or Matthew 1,  I skipped all that and headed to the Book of Revelation and started there.  My logic was that if the Bible was history and God’s instructions for life,  why not just go to the end for the summary and wrap-up ??? So at the ripe old age of 15, I  dove in and read the book of Revelation.  At the time, I understood nothing but I did think it would be a cool movie.

What amazes me now after all these years is how few sermons are preached on Revelation and how few Bible studies / Sunday schools incorporate Revelation.   However, what appalls me most is that when you seek outside sources to supplement your study, you find diametrically opposed input ranging from a literal and prophetic interpretation to an allegorical spiritualization of historical events and numerous combinations of both.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!   The book of Revelation says: “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near. (Revelation 1:3 NASB)”  and  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. (Numerous passages NASB)” and I could go on and on.   I’ve looked and looked but cannot find one verse in Revelation that remotely says anything like “This which I  am about to tell you is way too deep and complicated for normal people.  Therefore, write down what you see and send it to the those with doctorate degrees in seven different denominations to pontificate on and document a multitude of nebulous and spurious meanings.”  No!  The Scriptures were not written for some esoteric think tank to interpret and apply; they were written for YOU!   If you fail to see this you will end up beliving what a modern day Pharisee and Sadducee tells you and not even recognize the true Savior when He comes … Does that sound familiar?

So back to the topic of Global Warming.  Will man be the cause of global warming?  The answer is:  Yes, but not via the method today’s scientists claim.  The path of mankind has been foretold and man will continue to pull further away from God …  (2Ti 4:3-4 NASB).  This, sadly, will continue until God finally says enough of this and unleashes His wrath on the earth and its inhabitants.  Global warming will occur but be only one of the major catastrophes so vividly described in(Revelation 5-19)  God caused because of man’s disobedience!

God will bring about global warming but God will also will provide the ultimate cure …. the Eternal State ( Rev 21).  So the question now becomes will you be clothed in white riding with Christ when He returns (Rev 19:14),  or one of those assembled with the Beast to fight the Lord when he returns (Rev 19:19 Hint: you lose).    Choose your side: the cause of global warming or beneficiary of the cure.

Standing for the Word

3 Dec

I became a Christian 32 years ago after the birth of my first son. As with many new Christians, I was originally on fire for the Lord but within a couple of years, I quenched that fire. Initially, I was hungry for the Word and grew quickly. Within the first year of my Christian life I begged God to send me where He wanted and use me as He desired. Guess what, He did! So I bet you’re asking yourself “what’s the problem then?” Well, the problem was me! I obeyed and went where God led and everything about the change was perfect; except me. I got exactly what I asked for but was disappointed at the same time. I was on a different career path in a different location but still yearned for my old career path and old location. Instead of running down this new path and going where God led, I would take the path a few steps and then try to forge my own trail; I became a very rebellious child. I never rejected the faith that saved me but, I most certainly did nothing to advance His Kingdom over the last 30 years. Gratefully, my loving Father never left me and kept nudging me back whenever I strayed to far. When I get to the Judgement Seat of Christ, there will most likely be no rewards for the last 30 years and all my works will be burnt and gone (1 Cor 3:13). The good news is that God is not finished with me yet!

So I return to the path I left almost 30 years ago. I repent of my sins and yeild to my Father’s will. I have looked in the mirror for too many answers, relying on me and my intellect to forge my path in life. I will not be perfect, but I stand ready “to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you …” (1 Pe 3:15 NASB).

I don’t know what direction God will take me now, but if it is anywhere near the point I departed from a long time ago, I expect this blog to contain an eclectic mix of key learnings and apologetics. Regardless of what it ends up to be it will be based on the Bible rather than my thoughts and desires. Will you join me in Standing for the Word?

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness (2 Ti 3:16, NASB)
